Golden

You told me once you saw
Golden,
Mountains of jewels in
Another’s dirty window.
You said the beauty
Made you speechless,
The colour burned bright to
The back of your eyes.

From that day
You bathed in sunsets
Cried at sunrise,
Wishing nature’s wealth
Would rise and set
For you alone.

And now you are old,
Wizened brown and still
Waiting, a life lost to
A wish of gold.
