The kids are screaming and shouting,
They’re running around the place,
The mousey brand new girlfriend
Has a frozen smile in place.
Uncle Michael’s done the turkey –
And done is quite the word,
Underneath the charred and frazzled skin
There once might have been a bird.
Grandma’s gone all racist,
And Grandad rolls his eyes.
Mum pours another sherry;
Dad eats his fifth mince pie.
The gifts have all been opened,
And disappointment now discends.
One of the extra teenagers
Slips off to meet his friends.
Auntie Sheila gets out the board games,
Starts forcing family fun.
She drains her wine and rolls the dice.
Christmas evening’s just begun….

Sounds pretty typical.
