Samuel Johnson’s cat

For I will buy your oysters
If you rest your one nightblack paw
Upon me.

Let me stroke your sable fur,
Feel the rumble of your
Throaty purr.

Together you and I,
Come, sit upon my chest
With your warmth I am
Blessed, at peace.
The words in my mind
Quieten, recede.

Holden, I am beholden to you
You are all I need
You are a fine cat; a very fine cat indeed.

    • Thank you! I read a little while ago that Samuel Johnson used to feed stray cats in London – not usually done at that time. His favourite, Holden, used to get oysters every day. I just thought that was such a lovely story! Glad you enjoyed!
